There are two types of ferries that operate in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands
Government ferry
The Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS) operates the government ferries between Port Blair, Havelock Island, and Neil Island, Hut Bay (Little Andaman), Long Island, Mayabunder, Rangat, Strait Island, Campbell Bay, etc. Govt Ferry predominantly serves the local islanders and thus, the tickets are sold out quickly at the counter. One cannot book Govt. Ferry tickets online as they can only be booked by queuing up at the counters. To get these tickets, either you have to contact a local travel agent or stand in line at the counters. Getting tickets for government ferry for the popular island destinations such as Havelock and Neil Island can be incredibly difficult during the peak season (from October to January).
Private Ferry
Popular amongst tourists, there are several private ferries/cruises connecting Port Blair, Havelock Island and Neil Island. Unlike government ferries, the sailing schedule for these vessels is published in advance. These vessels start operating from October and you should make sure that you get your tickets booked in advance.
